Dr Andy Wilcox, Harper Adams University College:

Research Interests:

Dr. Andy Wilcox's research interests focus on how to make agriculture less environmentally damaging and particularly how to make farming better for biodiversity and wildlife. In the UK the intensity of agriculture has increased in the last 40 years due to mechanization, use of fertilisers and pesticides. Many habitats and species have been lost and farmland now supports many rare forms of wildlife. He has supervised projects that look how habitats can be improved for farmland plants, invertebrates and birds. Many conservation management options arising from the research are now offered to UK farmers and they receive payments from the government. These are called Agri-Environment Schemes.

Lecture on US Agri-Evironment Schemes
In 2003, Dr. Wilcox went to the USA to see the type of problems they faced from intensive agriculture and how these could be reduced. The situation is very similar to that found in the UK, with many species and habitats lost due to agriculture. This lecture shows the results of a visit to three different areas (grassland, rangeland & cropland) in the USA and the type of management options available within agri-environment schemes and the payments given to farmers.
